Xiamen Hulishan Fortress Tour Guide

Introduction

Xiamen Huli Mountain Fortress was built in 1894 (Qing Guangxu 20th year). The heritage conservation area covers approximately 55,400 square meters, including the castle area of 13,000 square meters, divided into:

  • Battlefield area
  • Barracks area
  • Mountainous area

The fortress features a half-bunker, half-wall architectural style, blending European influences with the charm of China’s Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture.

Hulishan Fortress is a product of China’s modern foreign affairs movement. Due to its strategic location, it has historically been known as “the gateway to Fujian, the key to the south of the sky”.

Key Highlights:

  • The 28 Krupp cannons in the warping area are renowned as the “King of World Cannons”. Recognized by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage as “the world’s existing 19th-century manufactured, fully preserved breech-loading coastal artillery”, they were included in the national “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” for heritage protection and the Shanghai World Guinness Book of Records.
  • The iron-mold iron cannon in the mountainous area is a rare artifact of China’s modern iron-mold casting method and a treasured relic of Taiwan’s defense history.

As Xiamen’s tourism landmark, Hulishan Fortress combines:
Rich historical & cultural value
Unique coastal geography
Stunning natural landscapes
Diverse tourism activities

It stands as a must-visit cultural, leisure, and scenic destination along Xiamen’s island-round road.
